Description

The Terrabound Men's UPF 50+ Sun Hoodie is a lightweight outdoor top designed for long days in the sun - hiking, fishing, walking, or travelling in warm weather. Rated UPF 50+, the fabric blocks approximately 98% of UVA and UVB rays across every area it covers, reducing the skin exposed to the sun to just your face.

Built from 140gsm 100% polyester with four-way stretch construction and raglan sleeves, it moves without restriction in every direction. The moisture-wicking quick-dry fabric ventilates heat during activity so it stays comfortable in warm conditions — not clammy or heavy. The integrated hood covers the head, neck, and ears, and extended thumb loops bring coverage to the back of the hands.

Suited to coastal paths, river banks, hillside trails, and warm weather travel, the Terrabound Sun Hoodie delivers whole-body UV coverage from hood to thumb loops in a layer light enough to forget you're wearing it. Relaxed fit works as a standalone top or as a base layer under a shell.

Key Features:

  • UPF 50+ rated fabric blocks approximately 98% of UVA and UVB rays — covers head, neck, ears, arms, and hands in a single layer.
  • Integrated hood and extended thumb loops minimise exposed skin on long days outside, reducing how much of the body needs suncream.
  • Four-way stretch construction with raglan sleeves allows full arm freedom — no restriction when using trekking poles, casting, or paddling.
  • Moisture-wicking quick-dry 140gsm polyester stays cool and comfortable during physical activity in warm weather.
  • Relaxed fit and lightweight construction work as a standalone warm-weather top or as a packable base layer under a waterproof shell.

Available in six colourways and sized S to 3XL - practical kit for anyone who spends serious time outside in the sun.

Please note: Our Sun Hoodie is designed as everyday sun-protective clothing for general outdoor use. It is not medical or specialist protective equipment, and we can't guarantee a specific level of UV protection for medical purposes. If you have a medical condition that requires certified protective clothing, please don't rely on this garment for that. Speak to your doctor and choose clothing that is certified for your needs.

Please also bear in mind that UV protection varies by colour: the paler, less saturated shades offer a lower level of protection than the deeper, more saturated ones. If protection is your main priority, we'd suggest choosing a stronger, more saturated colour.

Why cover up in summer?

Bare arms burn.
Covered arms breathe.

The counterintuitive way to stay comfortable in the sun. Lightweight, breathable fabric that shields your skin and wicks heat away, so covered feels cooler than bare.

Six reasons people are switching to a sun hoodie

Cooler than bare skin

Sounds backwards, works forwards. Out in direct sun, the airy wicking fabric creates its own shade and moves sweat off your skin, so covered feels cooler than bare.

The kind of damage you can't undo

A burn fades in a week. What the sun does underneath adds up over years. Covering up is the simplest way to stop it before it starts.

No grease. No reapplying.

Nothing to rub in every two hours, nothing greasy on your hands, nothing to run into your eyes. Put it on once and get on with your day.

Covers what you always miss

Ears, neck, backs of your hands: the spots sunscreen never reaches, and the first places reflected light off water, rock and sand finds. The hood and thumb loops cover them by design.

Doesn't sweat off or wash off

Sunscreen slides off with sweat and disappears in water. Fabric coverage stays put through the sweatiest days, and dries fast when it does get wet.

The serious outdoor crowd switched first

Anglers, mountain guides, landscapers and thru-hikers have lived in sun hoodies for years. The people who can't avoid the sun cover up on purpose.

What does UPF 50+ mean?

UPF is sun protection for fabric, like SPF is for sunscreen. A UPF 50+ rated fabric is designed to let only a small fraction of UV through to your skin. Unlike sunscreen, it doesn't fade through the day: the coverage is woven in, so it works from the moment you put it on until the moment you take it off.

Where does the number come from? A fabric earns its rating from how it's made: synthetic fibres like polyester naturally block more UV than cotton, and a tighter weave blocks more still. UPF 50+ sits at the top of the scale, and the protection is part of the fabric itself, not a coating.

Good questions

Won't I be too hot in a hoodie?

That's the whole trick: this isn't a winter hoodie. It's a thin, airy, moisture-wicking layer that shades your skin and lets the breeze through. Direct sun on bare skin heats you up; light cover with airflow keeps you more comfortable. It's why people who work in the sun all day wear sleeves.

Honest caveat: the cooling effect shines out in open sun. In deep shade or woodland it's simply a light, comfortable layer.

I always wear a cap. Isn't that enough?

A cap shades your face and misses your ears, neck and the sides of your head; ask anyone who's come home with blistered ears under a brimmed hat. Light also bounces up off water, rock and sand, reaching the places a brim can't. The hood covers all of it, and it fits fine over a cap: brim shades the face, hood covers the rest.

Do I still need sunscreen?

Yes. The hoodie only protects the skin it covers, so keep using sunscreen on the exposed bits: your face, the front of your hands, anywhere the fabric doesn't reach.

One honest note: if your skin type, family history or a medical condition means you need to be extra careful in the sun, treat the hoodie as one layer of your protection, not the whole plan. Keep up the sunscreen on exposed skin and follow your doctor's advice.

What about cloudy days?

UV doesn't care much about cloud, which is why the sneakiest burns happen on grey days and in spring. Whatever the sky is doing, the covered areas stay covered.

Does it work when wet?

Honest answer: it keeps covering you, but like most fabrics, UV protection can drop while the fabric is soaked. The good news is it dries quickly, and it never washes off the way sunscreen does. For long stretches in strong sun, let it dry rather than staying soaked through.

Can I wear it in the water?

Plenty of people do: paddling, wading, boat days. It's quick-drying, so it won't stay soggy for long. Just remember the honest note above: soaked fabric can protect less, so let it dry out during long stretches in strong sun.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cool and hang it to dry; the quick-dry fabric doesn't need long. Don't iron it, and skip the fabric softener: heat and softener both work against technical wicking fabric.

Does the protection wear out?

The protection is built into the fabric, not sprayed on, so it doesn't wash out. Like any garment, though, a heavily worn one protects less: if the fabric ever gets thin or stretched enough to let light through, it's time for a fresh one.

Does the colour matter?

A little. Darker and more vibrant colours absorb more UV before it reaches your skin, so deeper shades typically protect a touch better than pale ones. That said, pick the one you'll actually wear: the best sun protection is the layer you put on.

Is it only for summer?

No. UV doesn't switch off when the temperature drops: cool spring days and bright winter walks still add up. It's also light enough to wear as a base layer under a fleece or shell, so it earns its place in the pack year-round. Sun cover in summer, extra layer in the shoulder seasons.

What's the fit like?

Relaxed and comfortable, with four-way stretch, and that's deliberate: sun cover works best worn easy, because fabric pulled tight stretches thinner and protects less. The thumb loops keep coverage in place when you move. Check the size chart on this page to match your measurements.
