Wild camping sits in a strange legal grey area in the UK. Outside of Scotland - where the Land Reform Act gives you the right to camp almost anywhere responsibly - England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are a different story. Technically, you need landowner permission. In practice, the unwritten rules of Leave No Trace mean most people who wild camp sensibly, quietly, and cleanly rarely have problems.
Here's what you need to know before you sleep out under the stars.
Scotland: You're Free (With Responsibilities)
Scotland's access rights are among the most progressive in the world. You can camp on most unenclosed land as long as you follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code: leave no trace, use a lightweight stove rather than open fires in dry conditions, move on after two or three nights, and respect the land as if it were yours - because in a very real sense, it is.
The best wild spots? Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, Torridon, and the Cairngorms. Just avoid the loch shores during peak summer when permit zones apply around Loch Lomond.
England and Wales: The Grey Area
There's no general right to wild camp in England or Wales. But Dartmoor National Park is the one legal exception - and a brilliant one at that. Beyond Dartmoor, your best strategy is to pitch late, leave early, and treat the land impeccably. Many landowners don't mind if you ask. A quick message via the Countryside Stewardship scheme contacts or a knock on a farmhouse door often gets a yes.
The Lakeland fells are a long-standing informal exception too - wild camping has happened there for generations, and the National Trust largely tolerates it on higher ground.
The Kit That Makes It Work
Wild camping rewards those who travel light. A three-season sleeping bag, a well-insulated mat, and a shelter that pitches quickly in the dark are your foundations. A one-person tent with good condensation management matters more than waterproofing on most UK summer nights - it's not always rain you're fighting, it's the damp.
