Description

The Terrabound Men's Puffer Jacket is a colour block down jacket built for standing still in a British winter. A contrast upper yoke and stand collar run over a coloured body and sleeves, the shape that has been on high streets since the nineties. It is warm enough to wait around in and plain enough to keep on indoors.

Horizontal sewn-through baffles are filled with white duck down at 700 fill power, between 301 and 350 grams across the jacket, and the whole front closes on a full length moulded zip that runs up into a tall padded collar.

From the touchline and the dog walk to the station platform and the pub afterwards, it gives you warmth that still works once you stop moving, in a jacket that never looks like kit. Down is beaten by wet, so on rainy days wear a shell over the top.

Key Features:

  • 700 fill power white duck down lofts high for its weight, so the warmth arrives without the weight of a wax jacket.
  • Between 301 and 350 grams of down fill holds heat while you are standing still, not only while you are walking.
  • Horizontal sewn-through baffles box the down into place so it cannot slide down to the hem and leave cold patches.
  • A tall padded stand collar zips right up under the chin and seals the neck with no hood flapping behind you.
  • A drawcord hem pulls in at both side seams to shut out the up-draught and stop the jacket riding up in wind.
  • Two vertical welt pockets close on their own zips, so a phone and keys stay put when you sit down.
  • Elasticated cuffs with hook and loop tabs close the gap at the wrist over the cuff of a glove.
  • Six colourways with nothing printed on the chest, so it works with jeans, chinos and walking trousers alike.

Terrabound builds practical outdoor kit for people who are out every day, whatever the forecast. The Men's Puffer Jacket comes in Navy, Black, Grey, Clay, Olive and Jade.

Pair it with our Men's Fleece Jacket for a midlayer that sits underneath without pulling across the back.

Warm standing still.
Without the bulk.

White duck down at 700 fill power, 301 to 350 grams of it, boxed into sewn-through baffles under a tall stand collar, a drawcord hem and adjustable cuffs. Warmth that holds when you stop moving, in a jacket that never looks like kit.

“A colour-block puffer? Looks the part, but they’re never actually warm.”

Most of them aren't, because most of them are polyester wadding with a down-shaped silhouette, or real down in a quantity nobody will print. This one prints both numbers: 700 fill power, so the down lofts high for its weight, and 301 to 350 grams of it, so there is enough to hold heat while you stand on a touchline. Horizontal sewn-through baffles keep that down where it was put, and the collar, the hem drawcord and the cuff tabs close the three gaps a jacket leaks from. The shape is the nineties one. The inside is not.

Six reasons this is the coat by the door

Holds heat when you stop

Between 301 and 350 grams of white duck down across the jacket. That is the figure that decides whether a coat works on a platform or a touchline, and most listings leave it out.

Warm without the weight

700 fill power means the down traps a lot of air for every gram, so the warmth arrives without the heft of a wax jacket or three layers piled under a shell.

No cold patches

Horizontal sewn-through baffles box the down into rows on the body and the sleeves, so it cannot slide to the hem and leave a thin spot across your back after a season.

The collar does the hood's job

A tall padded stand collar zips right up under the chin and seals the neck. No hood flapping behind you, nothing to fill with rain, nothing to get in the way of a scarf.

Hem and cuffs that shut

A drawcord in the hem pulls in at both side seams, so the up-draught stays out and the jacket stops riding up in wind. Elasticated cuffs with a hook-and-loop tab close over a glove.

A coat, not kit

Colour-block yoke, six colourways, nothing printed on the chest, and two vertical pockets that zip shut over your phone when you sit down. It goes to the pub after the walk.

Three numbers that tell the story

700 fill power

How good the down is. The higher the number, the more air each gram traps, and the less the jacket weighs for the warmth it gives.

301 to 350 g

How much down is in there. This is the number that keeps you warm standing still, and the one most jackets don't print.

6 colourways

Navy, Black, Grey, Clay, Olive and Jade. Same fill, same baffles, same collar and seals in every one.

Three layers vs. one jacket

Fleece, gilet, shell
Puffer Jacket

Three layers and still cold
One layer that holds heat
Reaching up, sitting down
Bulk across the shoulders
Hip length and boxy, moves with you
After a season
Cold patches where the filling slid
Sewn-through baffles hold the down

Two numbers. Most jackets only print one.

Fill power tells you how good the down is: how much air a gram of it traps. Fill weight tells you how much down is actually in the jacket. A listing that shows you fill power and nothing else is telling you the quality of a filling without telling you the quantity, and a few grams of excellent down is still a thin coat. This jacket is specified on both. 700 fill power. 301 to 350 grams of it. Read those two together and you know what you are standing in.

What makes a puffer warm standing still?

Not the shape. Three things inside it, and each one answers a complaint you'll find in any down-jacket test:

  1. The fill. White duck down, 90 percent or more down content, at 700 fill power and 301 to 350 grams. Enough quality to loft, enough quantity to hold heat when you are not moving.
  2. The baffles. Horizontal sewn-through rows across the body and the sleeves, under a smooth unbaffled yoke. The down is boxed in, so it cannot migrate to the hem and leave you a cold back.
  3. The three seals. A tall padded stand collar at the neck, a drawcord in the hem at both side seams, and elasticated cuffs with hook-and-loop tabs. Those are the three places a jacket leaks warm air, and each one closes.

Honest limits: down is beaten by wet, so this is not a waterproof jacket and in steady rain it wants a shell over the top. It is built for standing and strolling, so walking hard uphill in it will be too warm; open the zip. And the cut is generous through the body, which is why XL and XXL are the same garment.

Good questions

What size should I order?

Order your usual size, XS to XXL. The jacket is cut generously through the body, so a fleece or a jumper fits underneath without pulling across the back, and the hem drawcord takes in any slack at the bottom. Because of that generous cut, XL and XXL are the same garment. Check the size guide on this page if you sit between two sizes.

Is it waterproof?

No. Down is beaten by wet: once the fill is soaked it stops trapping air, and that is true of every down jacket at any price. A frosty morning, a dry cold wind or a passing flurry is what it is for. For steady rain, wear a shell over the top. It is cut to take one.

How warm is it, really?

Warm enough to stand still in on a cold morning without three layers under it. We don't give a temperature rating, because nobody can honestly rate a jacket for a person they haven't met. What we do give is the two numbers that decide it: 700 fill power and 301 to 350 grams of down. Compare those with any jacket you own and you'll know.

Does it have a hood?

No, by design. A tall padded stand collar zips right up under the chin and seals the neck, which is the job most people want a hood for. There is nothing flapping behind you, nothing to fill with rain and nothing in the way of a hat or a scarf.

Will I overheat in it?

Indoors or walking hard uphill, yes. That is the correct complaint for a jacket with this much down in it, and it is why the full-length zip matters: open it the second you step inside or start climbing, and close it when you stop. For a long brisk walk in mild weather, the lightweight puffer linked above is the better tool.

What is the difference between fill power and fill weight?

Fill power is the quality of the down: how much air a given amount traps, so how warm it is for its weight. Fill weight is the quantity: how many grams of down are in the jacket. You need both to judge warmth. This jacket is 700 fill power with 301 to 350 grams of fill. Most jackets print only the first number.

Will the down shift and leave cold spots?

The baffles are sewn through in horizontal rows on the body and the sleeves, which boxes the down into each row. It can move a little within its row but it cannot slide down to the hem, which is how a cheaper puffer ends up thin across the back after a season.

What pockets does it have?

Two vertical welt hand pockets with webbing pull tabs, each closing on its own zip, so a phone and keys stay put when you sit down. There is no chest pocket and no inside pocket.

Is the yoke black on every colour?

On Navy, Black, Grey, Olive and Jade, yes: a black upper yoke and collar over the coloured body and sleeves. Clay is the exception, with a deep burgundy yoke and collar over a clay body. Grey has a heathered, melange finish; the others are plain.

Is there any branding on it?

A small "700" printed low on the right sleeve, and nothing else. No logo on the chest, no patch on the arm, so it works with jeans, chinos and walking trousers alike.

What goes underneath it?

On most days, a shirt or a jumper. On a properly cold day, a fleece: the body is cut with room for one. In steady rain, a shell goes over the top rather than more layers underneath. There is no need to size up for a midlayer.

What if it's not for me?

Send it back. It's covered by the 30-day return policy. If the fit's the issue, the size guide above is the place to start.
